A Zeze-yaki tea bowl from Kagerou-en (Mirage Garden kiln), by Omi Zeze.

The dark brown body carries a gold-painted plum blossom — ume, the first bloom of late winter, associated with perseverance and the moment before spring arrives. Against the deep ground, the gold does not shout. It simply appears, the way a ume tree announces itself in February: quietly, without ceremony, before anything else has stirred.

Zeze-yaki is one of the Enshu Seven Kilns, the kilns selected by Kobori Enshu in the early Edo period as exemplars of refined tea taste. The kiln operated near the shores of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture — omi, the ancient name for that province. Kagerou-en continues that tradition with consistent intention.

The signed wooden box reads: 膳所焼 金彩 梅坦 陽炎園.
