A Zeze-yaki chawan in the Annan-utsushi tradition — Vietnamese-inspired blue and white, reinterpreted through the quiet discipline of a Shiga prefecture kiln.
Cranes drift among clouds across the exterior. The sometsuke (blue underglaze) is applied with restraint — loose enough to breathe, precise enough to read. The blue sits somewhere between indigo and cobalt, softened by the warm grayish-white body beneath. This is not the sharp blue of Arita or Jingdezhen. It carries the particular gentleness of Annan (Vietnamese) ceramic tradition, where decoration suggests rather than declares.
Zeze ware holds a distinct position in Japanese tea history. Located on the shores of Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture, Zeze kilns operated under the patronage of the Zeze domain from the early Edo period. The ware was favored for its understated character — objects that serve tea practice without competing with it.
Annan-utsushi (Vietnamese-style copying) emerged when Japanese tea masters recognized in Vietnamese ceramics a quality that aligned with wabi sensibility: warmth over precision, suggestion over statement. This chawan continues that recognition.
The crane and cloud motif speaks to passage — movement through space without destination, presence without permanence.
