A large natsume by Yoshida Kasho, its black lacquer ground bearing raised gold taka-maki-e crests of chrysanthemum and paulownia — the kiku and kiri rendered in three dimensions, their surfaces pressing upward from the lacquer as though asserting their own presence. The interior of the lid is silver. Formality made physical. Tomobako inscribed 菊桐蒔絵 大棗 華正 with seal.
