A black lacquer o-natsume by Murata Sokaku — every surface, without interruption, given over to willow branches trailing downward and cherry blossoms opening outward, all in fine gold maki-e on a field that recedes into black. The silver interior catches the light when the lid lifts. There is nothing restrained about this piece. It is a full declaration.
Maki-e of this density — covering the entire surface of a turned lacquer form without a single unworked area — represents one of the highest demands in Japanese lacquer art. The artist must plan the composition to wrap continuously around a cylinder, the design resolved in three dimensions before a single brushstroke is applied in gold powder.
