Hagi does not announce itself. It reveals.
Watanabe Jozan works in the Hagi tradition of Yamaguchi Prefecture — a lineage that has changed almost nothing for four centuries, because nothing needed changing. The white glaze here carries that history quietly: soft, slightly porous, already beginning to blush pink at the foot where the clay breathes through.
The form is hira-chawan — wide and flat, built for summer use, where the tea cools slowly in an open vessel. At 14.4 cm across, the bowl invites both hands. The kannyu — the fine crazing across the glaze surface — is extensive and beautiful. Over years, tea will settle into these lines and the bowl will darken unevenly, becoming marked by its use.
This is the nature of Hagi ware. It ages with intention.
Dimensions: 14.4 cm diameter × 8.4 cm height.
Condition: Good. No damage.
Includes: Tomobako (artist-signed wooden box).
For those who understand that a tea bowl's second life begins at first use.
