The artist is unknown. The intention is not. Hand-built (tezukune), dark in body, the white glaze pours from the rim in arrested motion — streams of frozen white against deep earth, as though someone decided to document a waterfall and stopped it at the moment of greatest clarity. The undulating rim is not accident but argument: form pressed by hand is form that remembers the hand.
🔹 [ BASIC DETAILS ]
- Artist/Maker: Unknown (artist signature absent; strong individual hand evident)
- Title: Tezukune Chawan — Hand-Built Tea Bowl with White Cascade Glaze
- Dimensions: Diameter approx. 11.6 cm, Height approx. 7.2 cm
- Condition: Very good. Kiln variations consistent with hand-built character. No chips or repairs.
- Comes with: No box
In chado, the absence of attribution is not absence of value — some of the most revered bowls in tea history were recovered from anonymity, their authorship irrelevant beside their presence in the hand. The tezukune tradition — pinching and coiling rather than wheel-throwing — produces vessels that retain the direct trace of making: each irregularity is a decision, each unevenness a choice not corrected. This bowl belongs to that tradition of making-as-thinking.
The white glaze streams are bold in their placement and uncompromising in their descent. The dark brown-olive body — raw in texture, intentional in surface — provides the ground against which white declares itself. Interior shows the swirling marks of clay worked under pressure, the coils not entirely smoothed: the record of construction preserved in the final surface. A bowl that operates in the wabi register — not rough for its own sake, but honest in the way that handwork always is.
