Autumn grasses bend. A blue stream runs beneath. The wind is not depicted — it is felt.
"Nowaki" — the storm wind of late autumn that moves through susuki fields, laying them low and lifting them again. Tsuuji Azan has chosen this moment as the subject of a Ninsei-utsushi chawan, and the choice is not decorative. It is an argument about impermanence.
The cream-white ground is the silence before the wind arrives. Over it, color enamel painting of pampas grass and autumn grasses in motion, a flowing blue stream threading through. The imagery continues into the interior — the bowl does not stop at its rim.
Tsuuji Azan is a recognized master of Ninsei-utsushi, the tradition of faithfully channeling the aesthetic intelligence of Nonomura Ninsei, the 17th-century Kyoto master who first elevated tea ceramics to the level of painting. An impressed seal on the base confirms authorship.
Kyo-yaki, Kyoto ware. The refinement is not gentle — it is precise.
