Mountains do not announce themselves. They simply exist at the horizon, layered, patient, indifferent to being seen.
Kitahama Fugetsu worked in Wajima — Japan's foremost lacquer tradition, built over centuries in the Noto Peninsula — and brought to this large natsume a contemporary eye for the classical subject. The toyama (distant mountains) landscape unfolds in gold and bronze tones across glossy black ground. The forms are geometric in their simplicity: ridgelines stated clearly, recession implied through overlap rather than gradation.
The result is contemplative in a modern register. Not nostalgic, not decorative — present.
The interior carries uchi-gin tame-nuri: silver ground under layers of amber lacquer, creating depth that shifts from warm to cool depending on angle and light. The signed box bears a green cord and the inscription 遠山蒔絵 大棗 風月.
This is a large natsume — daï size — with presence proportional to its dimensions.
