A name inscribed becomes a question worth sitting with.

Mei: 桃葉 — Toyo, Peach Leaf. A name that holds softness and transience in equal measure. It was given by Kobayashi Taigen, head priest of Obai-in within the Daitokuji complex in Kyoto — one of the great centers of Rinzai Zen and the tea tradition it shaped.

The chashaku itself is bamboo, clean in its proportions, neither assertive nor retiring. What carries weight here is the calligraphy on the bamboo tube and the boxwood lid — the act of naming a utensil, of a priest setting brush to surface and making this particular scoop into a particular object.

Presented in its original bamboo tube with calligraphed mei label and signed wooden box.

Dimensions: L approx. 18.5 cm
