The word shizen — nature — is inscribed in the well of this flat tea bowl, placed where tea will pool, where the drinker's gaze will fall. Takahashi Rakusai, of the distinguished Rakusai lineage of Shigaraki potters, has grounded the piece in that declaration: what you hold is not separate from the world outside.

The hira-chawan form — wide, low, open — is made for summer, for allowing tea to cool, for slowing the encounter. The grey-white ash glaze carries iron spots where the kiln decided. The surface is not designed. It is witnessed.

Diameter 14.5cm, height 6.3cm. Housed in a fitted wooden box.
