Four panels. Four landscapes. One craftsman declared irreplaceable by the state.
Takahashi Keiten received designation as a Living National Treasure — Ningen Kokuhō — for his mastery of cast iron tea kettles. This shikishi-gama, named for the square poem-card panels that define its form, carries that designation fully. Each panel on the body holds an incised mountain landscape: receding ridgelines, open sky, the suggestion of water or a distant structure. Between the panels, Japanese verse has been rendered in relief, the calligraphy inseparable from the landscape it accompanies. The bamboo-segment handles rise from the shoulders with structural precision — the joint between organic form and cast metal achieved without seam showing. The bronze lid bears an openwork knob of ornate geometry.
H 21.4 cm. Mouth D 10.6 cm. Base D 14.2 cm. Yonhōsan tomobako (four-side-joined wooden box) with full inscription and seals.
Keiten worked primarily in Yamagata Prefecture, where the nanbu tekki tradition had established its deepest roots. His pieces entered major museum collections and tea houses. The shikishi format — named for the rectangular paper cards used for poetry and calligraphy — situates this kettle at the intersection of literary and ceramic culture. Water boiled in iron acquires a different character. That is a claim Japanese tea practice has made for centuries.
This piece is not reproduction. It carries the weight of the hand that made it.
