A natsume that asks to be turned slowly in the hand. Nakamura Kosai renders the taga-sode (whose sleeves?) motif across a deep amber-gold ground: billowing panels of imagined robes carry chrysanthemums and bush clover in red, white, and gold polychrome maki-e, the composition shifting with each rotation so that no single face exhausts the design.
🔹 [ BASIC DETAILS ]
Diameter 6.5 cm, height 6.7 cm. No damage. Signed tomobako (original wooden storage box). A considered piece for a mid-sized natsume position in the formal tea setting.
• SKU: 260413_a_2728
• Includes: Signed wooden storage box (tomobako)
🔹 [ CULTURAL & ARTISTIC INSIGHT ]
The body alternates between warm gold lacquer passages and areas of deep black, giving the piece a formal gravity that the flowering motifs then release. The lid sits flush and rounds gently, continuing the pattern without interruption. From any angle, the design holds.
🔹 [ DEEP-DIVE COMMENTARY ]
Nakamura Kosai is an established lacquer artist working in the classical Kyoto tradition, known for his command of the taga-sode format — a subject rooted in Heian court poetry, where fragrant sleeves left behind become the vessel for longing and seasonal memory. Here, autumn flowers carry that weight without announcement.
