Color as ceremony. Pattern as cosmology.
Sugita Shohei works from Kiyomizu Sannenzaka, the historic slope in Kyoto where overglaze enamel painting reached its heights. This bowl is an utsushi — a considered homage — to the Ninsei tradition of polychrome Kyo-yaki that defined Edo-period tea aesthetics.
Shippo-tsunagi, the linked seven-jewel lattice, runs in deep red and teal across the body. Panels open within it to reveal the Four Noble Plants: plum, bamboo, chrysanthemum, orchid. Each appears with restraint. The brushwork is fine without announcing itself.
A gold rim holds the composition. Gold accents thread through the enamel. The overall effect is formal without being cold — the warmth of Kyoto craft in full register.
Sugita Shohei is a recognized master of Ninsei-style color painting. His work enters collections and tea rooms with equal ease.
