A compact aka-raku tea bowl — red and black glaze moving across the surface like a landscape seen from great height.
The characteristic raku process is visible in every aspect of this vessel: the hand-built form slightly irregular, the glaze responding to thermal shock with dramatic color shifts from deep crimson to black. Where the glaze thins, the red burns through. Where it pools, darkness gathers. The result is a surface that reads like terrain — geological, unpredictable, alive.
At roughly 8.7 cm in diameter, this is a smaller chawan — intimate in scale, concentrated in presence. The raku seal on the base confirms its lineage within the tradition that Chojiro established in the sixteenth century and that continues to define what tea ceramics can be.
Raku is not a glaze technique. It is a philosophy of acceptance — each firing a conversation between intention and chance. This bowl carries that conversation clearly.
