Four compositions circle the body without repetition. Sparrows lift from rice stalks. Susuki bends in unseen wind. Bamboo scarecrows stand still against the field. Each face of the vessel is a different moment in the same season — observed, not arranged.
The maki-e density here is exceptional. There is almost no bare lacquer. Gold dust, raised lines, and polished passages coexist — togidashi, takamaki-e — each technique chosen for what it describes. Rice grain. Wing edge. The hollow space between grass.
Inside the lid: three gold sparrows, small and precise, facing different directions. The gold dust rim seals the composition. Signed Shoun in the tomobako.
This is a piece where autumn is not illustrated — it is inhabited.
