A Shodai-yaki chawan by Chikashige Jitaro of the Kengun kiln, carrying the calm authority of Kumamoto's ceramic tradition.
The natural ash glaze settles across the surface in gentle gray-green tones — the quiet result of wood ash meeting clay at temperature. There is no forced drama here, only the honest record of a firing. The form is clean and understated, shaped with the assurance of a potter working within a tradition he knows deeply.
Shodai-yaki originates from Kumamoto Prefecture, established under the patronage of the Hosokawa clan in the early Edo period. The Kengun kiln continues this lineage, producing ware that favors natural glazes and restrained beauty over decorative ambition. The tradition values what the kiln itself contributes — ash fall, flame path, atmospheric chemistry — as co-authors of each piece.
This bowl is in near-unused condition, suggesting it was made and carefully stored, waiting.
Accompanied by tomobako (artist-signed wooden box).
Dimensions:
• Diameter: approx. 11.5 cm (4.5 in)
• Height: approx. 7 cm (2.8 in)
Condition: Near-mint. No chips, no cracks, no signs of use.
