The exterior carries the raw character of Shigaraki clay: coarse-grained, sun-colored, with the grit of the mountain earth still present on the surface. The interior draws the eye inward. A warm reddish-brown ground catches the natural ash glaze as it pools and settles, producing a bidoro effect — that glassy, jade-tinged luminescence that only wood-fired kilns generate through chance and patience. The swirl of the potter's hand is preserved in the interior contour.

Shigaraki is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with a tradition reaching back to the Nara period. The aesthetic it embodies — rough, direct, deeply earthen — has long found a home in the tea ceremony, valued precisely because it refuses elegance in the conventional sense. Rakusai works within this tradition without apology.
