The kiri (paulownia) is a motif of imperial resonance, traditionally paired with the phoenix. Here it shares the surface with the quiet bamboo grass, a pairing that holds both grandeur and restraint within the same hand.
The use of iro-maki-e — color introduced into the gold lacquer work — gives this piece a warmth unusual in formal natsume. It is a piece for those who collect with their eyes.
