Saijo Issai has given this naka-natsume a world. Black lacquer carries a landscape built from gold maki-e and raden inlay: large pines reaching upward, hills rolling into distance, a thatched-roof cottage settled into the scene. The mother-of-pearl catches light as the piece turns — the sky shifts, the grasses seem to move.
The brushwork is precise without being stiff. The interior is black lacquer finished with a gold rim. H6.6cm, D6.7cm. The tomobako bears the artist's calligraphy with clarity and authority. A piece that holds a season inside it.
