Black that is not merely black. The glaze on Ryumonji-yaki accumulates depth — layer after layer of Kagoshima earth, fired in the tradition of a kiln that has been working since the Edo period.Ryumonji-yaki holds designation as a cultural heritage kiln of Kagoshima Prefecture. The documentation label accompanies this bowl in its wood box: 龍門司焼. The kiln signs its work with provenance, not just a name. The form is full and rounded. It does not compress or stretch toward effect. At this weight and scale — new, unused — it carries the gravity of something that has been made to be used for a long time.Kuro-Satsuma, black Satsuma ware, has a different history from the gilded white Satsuma familiar in export markets. This is the domestic tradition: unpretentious, substantial, lasting.A first bowl. Or a final one.
