A Rikyu-gata natsume by lacquer artist Tetsuzan, worked in tame-nuri — the amber transparent lacquer technique that gives depth its warmth, its sense of looking through rather than at a surface.

On the lid and body, mirugai. Geoduck shells rendered in gold maki-e, their forms unhurried and quiet. The shell is an ancient motif in Japanese lacquerwork — a symbol of pairing, of things that belong together across distance.

The Rikyu form is the most essential of natsume proportions: resolved, without argument. Tetsuzan's hand works within that resolution and finds room for expression without breaking it.

A caddy that carries its tea and its history in the same gesture.
