Ink grass over earth. That is the whole proposition.
Ogawa Kinji layers bold susuki strokes — pampas grass rendered in dark iron-oxide ink — across a ground of horizontal hakeme lines. The brush does not decorate. It records a moment of movement, then holds still.
The form is generous without being wide. Earthy brown clay body, darkened at the foot with the density of a kiln that knew what it was doing. This is Mingei thinking: no ornament for its own sake. Every mark carries weight.
In hand, the hakeme ridges create a subtle texture that anchors the bowl. The ink grass reads differently in different light — at times stark, at times almost tender.
Dimensions: 12.2 cm diameter × 8.5 cm height.
Condition: Good. No chips, cracks, or repairs noted.
Includes: Tomobako (artist-signed wooden box) and tomobukuro (storage cloth).
For practitioners of wabi-cha or collectors of contemporary Mingei work, this bowl asks no justification. It simply is what it is — and that is enough.
