Shigaraki does not soften. Ogawa Jinsei understood this.
The clay is coarse — the kind that holds the memory of the earth it came from. Purple-brown ash glaze pools where the form curves, thins where it rises. Ash deposits from the kiln atmosphere gather on the shoulder: pale grey, almost chalky against the dark ground. This is the kiln's handwriting. It cannot be replicated.
The Kiraku-yaki seal is pressed cleanly into the foot. Small, compact form. Good weight — present in the hand without demanding attention. The walls have thickness without heaviness. The rim is irregular in the way that natural things are irregular.
For the tea practitioner who understands that a bowl which looks like the earth is already halfway to ceremony.
