An Okina Noh mask carved by Kenji — the face of the Old Man, Japan's oldest theatrical archetype. The grain of the wood reads through the surface. Wrinkles deepen at the brow, the cheeks carry the fullness of accumulated time, and the eyes hold a smile that does not resolve into laughter. Hemp cord forms the beard and eyebrows. The back of the mask is hollowed precisely for wear. This is performance made permanent.
◾ Artist: Kenji (憲治), wood carver
◾ Object: Okina (翁) mask — Noh theater, god of longevity and harvest
◾ Dimensions: approx. 15.5cm × 12.3cm
◾ Material: Wood (natural grain) with hemp hair, lacquered tie-cord
◾ Condition: No damage — hemp fittings intact
◾ Provenance: Signed wood box (共箱) included
◽ Cultural Insight
The Okina mask is among the most sacred objects in the Japanese performing arts. Unlike other Noh masks, Okina is treated as a divine presence rather than a character: the actor who dons it undergoes ritual purification, and the mask itself is kept separately from all other theatrical objects. The face — round, deeply lined, with a slight upward curl to the lips — represents benevolent age: the god who presides over long life, abundant harvest, and the continuation of civilization. Collecting an Okina mask is understood, in Japan, as bringing its blessing into the home.
◽ Deep Dive
Kenji's carving works with the wood grain rather than against it — the flowing lines of the mask's surface follow the natural patterns of the timber, so that age and material become one texture. The hemp strands representing eyebrows and beard are knotted and trimmed with precision, each tuft individually attached. The reverse side shows the hollow interior carved to fit the human face, with a lacquered red cord for attachment. The mask sits at a slight forward tilt when held at arm's length — the traditional orientation for viewing, where the expression subtly shifts between solemnity and joy.
