The kiln did this. The maker understood when to step aside.

Nishikawa Minoru's tenmoku chawan carries bold amber-orange streaks across a deep, dark ground. Tiger-stripe is the common name for this effect — iron crystallization during firing, where mineral compounds migrate through the glaze as temperature rises and falls. No two firings produce the same pattern. This one is dramatic.

The form is cylindrical, leaning slightly toward the Raku proportion — a depth that holds warmth. Each surface tells a different story. Turn the bowl: the streaking shifts, intensifies, thins. The dark ground absorbs where the amber does not.

Extremely photogenic. But the photograph does not prepare you for the weight in hand.

Note: The tomobako lid has minor age staining. The bowl itself is in good condition.
