🔹 [ Deep-Dive Commentary ] Negoro lacquerware takes its name from Negoro-ji temple in Wakayama Prefecture, where monks produced red-over-black lacquerware for daily use. Over generations of handling, the red wore to reveal the black beneath — an effect so admired that later craftsmen began intentionally creating it.
The faceted form of this set is significant. By carving planes into the surface, Kitahara created edges where the wear concentrates, accelerating the revelation of the underlayer. This is design in dialogue with time — an understanding that the finished object is not what leaves the workshop, but what emerges through use.
