🔹 [ Cultural & Artistic Insight ]
Negoro-nuri is a discipline of patience: red lacquer applied over black, then worn. What emerges at the points of contact — the lip, the base, the ridge of the form — is not damage. It is depth. The black underneath was always meant to appear.

Kitahara Hisashi carved both the katakuchi and guinomi with faceted planes that catch light differently depending on the angle. Both show the same beautiful wearing: vermillion warming at the surfaces, black asserting itself at the edges.

"Time made visible in lacquer layers — the maker knew this moment of revelation would come."

🔹 [ Deep-Dive Commentary ]
Negoro lacquerware takes its name from Negoro-ji temple in Wakayama Prefecture, where monks produced red-over-black lacquerware for daily use. Over generations of handling, the red wore to reveal the black beneath — an effect so admired that later craftsmen began intentionally creating it.

The faceted form of this set is significant. By carving planes into the surface, Kitahara created edges where the wear concentrates, accelerating the revelation of the underlayer. This is design in dialogue with time — an understanding that the finished object is not what leaves the workshop, but what emerges through use.

The katakuchi (spouted pourer) and guinomi (cup) function as a pair: the pourer delivers sake to the cup in a single, controlled stream. Together, they constitute a complete sake-serving ritual.
