Petals on moving water. The season already passing.
Hanaikada — flower raft — is a classical Japanese poetic image: blossoms fallen from their branches, carried downstream in clusters, beautiful precisely because they are already leaving. Nakatani Hakuho has rendered this image on black lacquer ground in gold and red maki-e with the patience the subject demands.
Cherry blossoms and maple leaves drift across swirling gold water currents. The currents do not stop at the lid seam. They continue, the composition unbroken across the whole form, the flow indifferent to the vessel's geometry.
The form is Rikyu natsume — the proportions established by Sen no Rikyu himself for the small tea caddy used in thin tea service. Compact. Resolved. The lacquer surface carries a deep gloss, the black ground absorbing light except where the gold interrupts it.
The tomobako shows minor yellowing. The natsume itself shows no notable damage.
