The Yatsuhashi — Eight Bridges — motif originates in the Ise Monogatari, a tenth-century poem sequence in which a traveler crosses eight plank bridges over the Mikawa marshes, each step carrying him further from the capital and deeper into feeling. Kenzan, working in early eighteenth-century Kyoto, distilled this image into repeating bands of purple iris and geometric bridge — form and emotion braided.
Nakamura Nokyu works in this tradition: cream crackle ground (kannyu) receives overglaze enamels applied with the confidence of a brushstroke that cannot be revised. The iron-red bridge, the violet iris, the pale yellow stamens — each color fired separately, each a decision.
Kyo-yaki ceramics carry the refinement of a city that has been producing art objects for imperial and aristocratic patrons for over a thousand years. This bowl enters a room already knowing that.
