A declaration in red and black. This natsume by Nakamura Kosai takes the taga-sode (whose sleeve?) motif into its most celebratory register. The body divides between vivid red and deep black, the two grounds meeting in the diagonal sweep of an imagined kimono. Gold cranes lift through both zones — one in full flight across the body, others suggested in the patterned field of the lid. Gold pine branches extend across the red ground below. The visual effect is unambiguous: this is a piece for auspicious occasions.
