[ CULTURAL INSIGHT ]
The sansui (mountain-water) landscape as painted subject in East Asian ceramics descends from Chinese literati painting — the scholar retreating from the court into mountains, accompanied by attendants and horses. This iconography, transmitted through Japanese ceramics of the Meiji and Taisho eras, carries a specific meaning: the world of the cultivated mind exists beyond political obligation, in the company of nature and good conversation. Murata Konosuke sets this narrative in motion around the bowl's entire circumference, refusing the static vignette in favor of continuous movement.

[ DEEP DIVE ]
The technical execution here is distinguished. Two separate decorative registers are maintained simultaneously: the main landscape band at mid-body and an interior rim band of diamond-lattice (kikko-mon), with a foot-level classical fret in matching cobalt. The blue is applied in graduated washes — thin atmospheric mist over the mountain peaks, denser strokes for pine trunks and architectural lines. The high-fired porcelain body shows no warping at this relatively large dimension (18.2 cm). The foot shows "Rokusai Kiln" in Murata's hand. New and unused, this bowl arrives in the same state it left the kiln — a complete object, sealed in its original significance.
