Morishige Workshop — Kinma (Burmese-Style Lacquer Incising) Natsume
Sanuki Lacquerware Tradition
Red and black interlock across every surface of this natsume — a dense floral arabesque carved into layered lacquer using the kinma technique. The method is exacting: multiple coats of colored lacquer are applied, then incised to reveal the strata beneath, each cut exposing a different hue. The result is a textile-like surface of extraordinary density, where pattern and material become indivisible.
Kinma arrived in Japan from Southeast Asia through centuries of cultural exchange, finding particular home in the Sanuki region of Shikoku. Morishige Workshop carries this tradition forward with disciplined craft — the carved lines clean, the color contrasts sharp, the all-over composition balanced without a single dead zone.
A natsume that honors a technique born of cross-cultural dialogue, executed with Japanese precision.
Accompanied by signed tomobako (wooden storage box).
