The method is exacting: multiple coats of colored lacquer are applied, then incised to reveal the strata beneath, each cut exposing a different hue. Kinma arrived in Japan from Southeast Asia through centuries of cultural exchange, finding particular home in the Sanuki region of Shikoku.
