The crane does not celebrate. It arrives. Miyaji Eika's chawan marks the ritual passage of the new year not with ornament but with the grammar of auspicious form — red sun, gold clouds, white bird — each element occupying its position with the inevitability of classical arrangement. The crackle glaze across the body holds light the way memory holds ceremony: quietly, across time.
🔹 [ BASIC DETAILS ]
- Artist/Maker: Miyaji Eika (宮地英香)
- Title: Hinode Tsuru Chawan — Sunrise and Crane Tea Bowl
- Dimensions: Diameter approx. 11.7 cm, Height approx. 7.7 cm
- Condition: Good. Fine crackle consistent with glaze character. No chips or repairs.
- Comes with: Paper box only (no tomobako)
In the calendar of chado, the New Year (Hatsugama) is among the most freighted ceremonies of the year — the first fire, the first water, the first bowl. Chawan commissioned for this occasion carry the weight of that threshold, the visual vocabulary drawn from classical Japanese imagery: the rising sun (hinomaru), the crane in flight (tsuru), the gold of imperial clouds. This is not decoration; this is the liturgical image-set of Japan's oldest aesthetic language.
The cream-white crackle ground gives the red sun its authority by contrast. The crane in white against red is the negative space working — the bird defined by what it is not. The opposite face is deliberately plain, allowing the bowl to rest between uses without competition. Interior cream crackle is clean, holding whatever shade of matcha is whisked within it. A bowl for the threshold moment.
