A Mishima-de jikiro by Asami Yoshizo — wide, flat, circular, the grey-blue celadon ground stamped across its entire surface with small chrysanthemum flowers inlaid in white slip. The lid carries the same field of stamped blooms, continuous and patient, one flower repeating into a texture that functions less as pattern than as ground itself. Bearing the inscription of Horinouchi-ryu 12th Grand Master Kenchu-sai.
Mishima-de (三嶋手) is one of the named Korean ceramic traditions that Japanese tea masters of the Muromachi and Momoyama periods identified, collected, and elevated into the canon of tea ware. The name comes from the Mishima calendar, whose fine printed text the Japanese saw mirrored in the densely stamped patterns of this ware — buncheong celadon from the Joseon dynasty, characterized by its grey-blue glaze and the systematic stamping and inlaying of decorative motifs in white slip.
The jikiro form — a lidded container used for kaiseki food during formal tea gatherings — places this piece in direct service of the meal that precedes the tea. It holds nourishment before the bowl. Its presence at the table is functional and ceremonial simultaneously.
Asami Yoshizo works in the Mishima-de tradition, an act of studied revival and continuation. The inscription by Kenchu-sai (Horinouchi-ryu 12th, 兼中斎) confirms the piece's standing within the formal tea lineage — an iemoto signature that places the object within an authenticated transmission.
Dimensions: approximately 20.8cm diameter, 12.2cm height.
