An o-natsume in Wajima-nuri, carrying a pine design of full formal presence. Gold maki-e covers the body with the image of an ancient pine — branches extending with authority, needle clusters drawn individually in fine gold line. Raden accents are scattered throughout, their iridescence punctuating the composition without softening it.
The Wajima ground provides the structural density that this kind of work requires. Each element of the lacquer is built to last beyond the maker's hand.
