Cranes in gold against absolute black — still in mid-flight, as they have always been. Maehata Gaho, holder of the Traditional Craftsman designation, shapes a yukifuki (snow-blowing) tea caddy whose kiriai-guchi (flush-cut) lid closes with the silence of a museum vitrine. New, never used. The cranes will be discovered by the first hand that opens the box.
[ DETAILS ]
• Form: Kiriai-guchi yukifuki (flush-fitting lid, snow-blowing silhouette)
• Dimensions: Width 7.4 cm × Height 8.0 cm
• Decoration: Tsuru (crane) gold maki-e on black lacquer
• Artist: Maehata Gaho (前端雅峯) — designated Traditional Craftsman (伝統工芸士)
• Condition: New / Unused (新品未使用)
• Provenance: Complete set — signed wooden tomobako (共箱), blue cloth wrapper (共布), artist pamphlet (栞)
[ CULTURAL CONTEXT ]
The yukifuki form — named for the sweeping motion of wind-blown snow — is among the most refined silhouettes in natsume design. Its cylindrical body and precisely fitted lid require mastery of both turning and lacquering to achieve the seamless join that defines the form. Maehata Gaho's designation as a Traditional Craftsman (伝統工芸士) is awarded by the Japanese government to artisans who have sustained regional craft traditions at the highest level — an acknowledgment of decades of exacting practice.
The tsuru motif carries one of Japan's most durable symbolic codes: longevity, fidelity, auspiciousness. In maki-e rendering, the crane becomes an assertion of these qualities through craft rather than convention. The gold catches differently at each angle. The birds do not repeat — each is its own moment of flight.
This piece leaves the studio complete: box, cloth, documentation. Nothing has been opened before you.
