A wide celadon chawan from Toho kiln, carrying the visual language of Goryeo dynasty sanggam technique.
Lotus petals and cranes are inlaid beneath a jade-green glaze — each motif pressed into the clay body before firing, filled with white and dark slip, then sealed under celadon. The result is a drawing that lives inside the glaze, not on it.
The form is broad and shallow, inviting the eye to travel across the interior surface. Light pools in the center and catches the raised edges of each inlaid line.
Sanggam (inlay) is among the most labor-intensive decorative traditions in Korean ceramics. The technique demands precision at the leather-hard stage — one misplaced cut, and the motif cannot be corrected.
