【 CULTURAL CONTEXT 】
Oil-spot tenmoku (油滴天目) originated in Song Dynasty China and was brought to Japan by Zen monks returning from their studies. The technique demands precise kiln control: the iron-saturated glaze must reach a temperature window narrow enough to form the characteristic droplets — too cool and they dissolve back; too hot and they vanish entirely. The result is a surface that holds light differently at every angle, the silver spots brightening and dimming as the bowl turns in the hand. Kimura Morikazu works in this tradition with full technical command, applying it to the restrained cylindrical form of the tsutsuchawan.

【 DEEPER NOTES 】
The tube form (筒形) concentrates the glaze field on the vertical walls, creating a sense of upward movement — as if the silver spots are ascending. The bare, ochre-toned foot ring grounds this upward pull. This is a bowl in conversation with the cosmos.
