A Korean celadon chawan by Kim Jeong-muk, fired at Donggok kiln. White cranes drift among clouds across a jade-green field.
The sanggam (inlay) technique is executed with discipline — each crane and cloud form cut into the clay at leather-hard stage, filled with white slip, then buried beneath celadon glaze. The motifs do not sit on the surface. They inhabit it.
The bowl follows a classic conical profile: walls rising at a steady angle from a modest foot ring to a wide, open rim. This shape descends directly from Goryeo dynasty precedent, where the form was designed to present the interior decoration as completely as possible.
Crane and cloud together carry centuries of meaning in Korean visual culture — longevity, transcendence, passage between realms. Here they are stated without emphasis. Their presence is enough.
