A hira-chawan painted after Ogata Kenzan's morning glory tradition, made by Hashimoto Shiunn. Red, blue, teal, and white flowers climb the outer wall in full summer voice, their gold-lined petals catching light with quiet intensity. The wide shallow form holds the moment of a summer tea; the interior's crackled white glaze opens into silence beneath the blooms. With signed tomobako.

▪ CULTURAL CONTEXT
Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743) — painter, potter, poet, younger brother of Ogata Korin — gave Japanese ceramics its most vividly literary sensibility. His morning glory bowls established a template for seasonal specificity in tea: the hira-chawan (flat bowl) for summer, its wide opening releasing the heat of freshly whisked tea, its motifs marking the hour of dawn when the asagao blooms. Hashimoto Shiunn works within this inheritance — the polychrome palette echoes Kenzan's original enameled surfaces, while the wide crackle interior carries a quality the originals also prized: the feeling of looking at something that holds time inside it.

▪ COLLECTOR'S NOTE
The three faint circular tea-seasoning stains on the interior floor are the record of actual use — each ring is the circumference of a tea bowl placed inside this one during storage or ceremony preparation. The gold line detailing on the petals and leaves is delicate and intact. The exterior wall carries the most fully realized painting: red blooms on the left, blue on the right, white unfurling between them, with the teal leaf foliage filling the intervals with movement. On the outer surface, gold dust is scattered across the white crackle ground — a technique associated with Kenzan and Rinpa's decorative exuberance.
