Kawase Hyokan — Bamboo Grove (Chikurin) Maki-e O-Natsume
A large-format natsume consumed entirely by a bamboo forest rendered in dense gold maki-e. Hyokan's ambition here is total: every surface surrendered to the grove, culm after culm rising in layered gold against black lacquer, leaves overlapping at varying depths. A single passage near the joint introduces silver maki-e — a deliberate tonal shift that breaks the gold continuum with quiet intelligence.
The bamboo grove holds particular resonance in East Asian aesthetics — a space of withdrawal, clarity, and moral straightness. Hyokan does not illustrate this symbolism; he constructs it. The density of mark-making transforms the natsume into a space you enter rather than merely observe.
Accompanied by the artist's signed tomobako (wooden storage box).

Dimensions:
Height: approx. 6 cm
Diameter: approx. 8.3 cm
Condition: Excellent — one small area features silver maki-e at the body joint, consistent with the original design.
SKU: 260307_a_2350
