Kawai Kanjiro (1890–1966) remains one of the defining figures of the mingei (folk craft) movement — his commitment to chromatic intensity and elemental form established a vocabulary that his inheritors continue to develop. Kawai Toshitaka works within this lineage, employing gosu (cobalt blue derived from Chinese painting tradition) alongside tansai — the mineral-based color technique that gives his bowls their vivid, almost jarring presence against a tea room's quiet interior.
