A Karatsu-yaki flat tea bowl (hira-chawan) by Sanshu Kinsaku, third generation.

The form is wide and shallow — diameter 14.5 cm, height only 5.2 cm — the shape that opens toward the viewer, that makes the tea visible, that slows the moment of drinking. Spiral throwing marks trace the interior in loose, unhurried arcs. On the grey-white glaze surface, bamboo grass (sasa) is painted in iron oxide with the kind of mark-making that does not revise itself. A few strokes. The presence is complete.

Karatsu-yaki is the clay that shaped the aesthetics of Japanese tea ceremony more quietly than almost any other tradition. The ware came through the Korean potters brought to Kyushu after the 16th-century invasions, and it has carried that directness — the unfussy, the material-honest — ever since. Third-generation Kinsaku works within that lineage with full awareness.

The signed wooden box is included; the box lid has a crack — this is noted here honestly and does not affect the bowl. The bowl itself is in excellent condition.

Dimensions: diameter 14.5 cm, height 5.2 cm
Condition: Excellent (box lid has a crack — noted)
Box: Signed wooden box (tomobako) included
