A summer tea bowl built for open air and green tea. Wide, shallow, unhurried — the hirawan form invites the bowl to be held with both hands and turned slowly, the way summer light moves across water.
🔹 [ BASIC DETAILS ]
• Artist: Shuzan (seal-signed; Japanese artisan)
• Origin: Japan
• Material: Stoneware with iron glaze (tetsu-yu) and white slip (hakeme)
• Motif: Brushed Iron Glaze on White Slip Ground
• Era: 1990_2000
• Box: Tomobako (artist's wooden presentation box)
• Condition: Good, carefully inspected
🔹 [ Cultural & Artistic Insight ]
The surface carries its history visibly. A white slip ground, applied with deliberate roughness, catches the iron glaze where it was brushed on in vertical strokes and allowed to run. Where the two glazes meet, the iron darkens to near-black. Where it thins at the rim, it feathers into rust and smoke. The interior holds a faint spiral from the throwing, a quiet record of the hand that shaped it.
The foot is compact and cleanly trimmed, exposing warm reddish clay beneath — a grounding note against the pale body above.
Comes in its original paulownia wood box (tomobako), with brushed inscription and seal. The box reads: Tetsu-yu Hirawan — Iron Glaze Summer Tea Bowl. The seal is read as Shuzan.
🔹 [ Deep-Dive Commentary ]
A practiced piece from a Japanese artisan working in the wabi idiom. No cracks, no chips, no restoration. Ready for use.
