The wood was already beautiful. The snowflake acknowledged it.
Nakamura Kosai chose a flat form — hira-natsume — for this piece, letting the natural zelkova grain carry the weight of the design. The body asks nothing extra of itself. On the lid, a delicate yukiwa snowflake crystal has been carved and inlaid with precision: six-fold symmetry, each arm rendered with the same care given to the wood beneath it.
H5.3 cm, D7.8 cm. Interior lacquered. The flat silhouette and muted natural palette make this caddy suited to winter settings and to practices that value material honesty alongside craft.
The wabi aesthetic here is not absence — it is the decision to let the zelkova speak first, and place the snowflake where it belongs: on a surface that has earned the quiet.
