The glaze did not settle. It moved, pooled, and stopped exactly where it needed to.
This hagi-yaki flower vase arrives from an artist working within the Hagi tradition's most patient impulse: let the clay and fire negotiate. The faceted body — cut in broad, unhurried planes — catches light differently at each angle, turning from cool white to soft blush as the view shifts. The famous kannyu crackle of Hagi glaze maps the entire surface, a record of thermal conversation written in fine lines. The mouth is wide enough for a loose arrangement. The base is stable. The tomobako carries the inscription 壺 alongside the artist's seal.
H 18.6 cm. Mouth D 6.8 cm. Base D 9 cm.
Hagi ware emerges from Yamaguchi Prefecture, its lineage tracing through Korean ceramic traditions introduced in the sixteenth century. Among Japanese ceramic traditions, Hagi is distinguished by its nyu — a network of fine cracks in the glaze that, over years of use, absorbs tea residue and deepens in color. Collectors speak of this as yaki-naosu, the pot remaking itself through encounter.
The faceted shaping method here, hikizukuri-men, demands that the potter articulate decisions before the clay stiffens. Each plane is a committed gesture.
