Satsuma ware chawan bearing the mark of Chin Jukan — the kiln lineage that has defined Satsuma's highest register for over four centuries. A refined band of shippo (cloisonné-derived) pattern in gold, crimson, and violet encircles the rim above a cream ground of characteristic warmth.
The restraint is deliberate. Where lesser Satsuma announces itself, this bowl allows its credentials to settle quietly.
[ DETAILS ]

• Maker: 沈寿官窯 (Chin Jukan Kiln), Satsuma
• Decoration: Gold, red, and purple shippo (cloisonné-pattern) band
• Body: Cream Satsuma ground with characteristic fine crackle

• Condition: Excellent
[ CULTURAL INSIGHT ]
The Chin Jukan lineage descends from Korean potters brought to Satsuma domain (present-day Kagoshima) in the late sixteenth century. Across fourteen generations, the kiln has held its position as Satsuma's defining voice — acknowledged by imperial household, exhibited internationally, and collected with deliberate attention by those who understand what the name carries.
[ DEEP DIVE ]
Shippo, the interlocking circles symbolizing boundless connection and fortune, appears here not as surface ornament but as structural grammar. The band does not decorate the bowl — it defines the boundary between the plain field below and the world above the rim, a threshold the eye crosses each time the bowl is raised. Chin Jukan's gold work at this scale occupies the middle distance between calligraphy and jewellery: precise, unhurried, certain of its own weight.
