The kiln decided this. The potter could only watch.
Yohen — kiln transformation — refers to effects that occur beyond the potter's direct control. Atmosphere, temperature, the arrangement of flame: these forces act on the glaze and produce results that cannot be reliably reproduced. What emerged from the Chikushi Ano-yaki kiln here is a shifting aurora of blue and purple across a ground of deep black. The colors move as the bowl moves. What appears midnight blue from one angle becomes violet from another.
Ano-yaki is a kiln tradition of Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu — a region with its own ceramic history distinct from the better-known Karatsu and Hagi traditions. The white porcelain foot ring provides a clean close to the composition. The bowl is dated by its box inscription: Showa Kinoe-ne — 1984.
This bowl documents a moment that cannot be repeated.
Dimensions: 13.5 cm diameter × 7.5 cm height.
Condition: Good. No chips or cracks. Box shows minor surface wear consistent with age.
Includes: Tomobako (dated Showa Kinoe-ne / 1984).
For those who collect not what was made, but what happened.
