A chawan by the third-generation Oshio Shozan, shaped within the long memory of Takatori-yaki tradition.
The natural ash glaze moves across the surface in blue, gray, and lavender — colors that shift depending on the angle of light and the mood of the observer. These are not applied colors but atmospheric ones, born from the kiln's own chemistry. The transitions are subtle, almost imperceptible until the bowl is turned slowly in the hands.
Oshio Shozan's lineage connects to Takatori-yaki, one of the seven official kilns of the Kobori Enshu school. Enshu favored "kirei-sabi" — a beauty that is refined yet carries the depth of wabi. This chawan embodies that aesthetic: quiet dignity without austerity, refinement without preciousness.
The form is assured and well-proportioned. The foot ring is cleanly trimmed. Every element serves the whole without calling attention to itself.
Accompanied by tomobako (artist-signed wooden box).
Dimensions:
• Diameter: approx. 12.2 cm (4.8 in)
• Height: approx. 7 cm (2.8 in)
Condition: No chips, no cracks. The glaze surface is fully intact with its characteristic color variations preserved.
