A bamboo tea scoop bearing the name Fukuju — 'Felicitous Longevity' — carved and inscribed by Nangaku, the 517th abbot of Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto. Presented in its signed bamboo tube and original tomobako.

The chashaku is the most intimate object in the tea ceremony. It is held once per preparation, used once, and returned. In that single arc of movement — the lifting of powdered tea from the natsume — the scoop carries whatever intention its maker placed there.

Nangaku was head of Daitoku-ji, the Rinzai Zen temple in Kyoto that has presided over the Japanese tea ceremony for centuries — the temple of Ikkyu, the home of Sen no Rikyu's spiritual lineage. A chashaku from the hand of a Daitoku-ji abbot is not a decorative object. It is a document of that lineage.

The name Fukuju — written on the bamboo tube and the box lid — is an auspicious benediction, traditionally exchanged at the new year and in celebratory gatherings. The scoop itself is thin and pale, shaped with the precise curvature that allows the tea to fall freely.

Scoop length: approx. 18.1 cm. Tube length: approx. 21.3 cm, diameter approx. 2.5 cm.
