A tea scoop carved from white bamboo by Hosoi Katsudo, head priest of Ryugenin, one of the subtemples within the Daitokuji complex in Kyoto.
The mei — Chiyo no Haru, Eternal Spring — is not a decoration. It is a statement about time. About what endures beyond season.
The bamboo is unmarked by use. The carve carries the restraint of a hand that has held the ritual ten thousand times.
Presented in a bamboo tube, wooden inner box, and red outer box. The layers of containment are themselves part of the object's meaning.
